Sources said the now deceased, Ms Evelyne Makanyire (27), was first assaulted by her husband after she caught him being intimate with another woman on their matrimonial bed.
They said when Ms Makanyire demanded an explanation, the husband turned violent and assaulted her. A neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity said the woman was married to a policeman and the two used to quarrel.
She said the now deceased was employed by a leading Gweru supermarket as a till operator.
“On Sunday, she knocked off from work in the afternoon and went home only to find her husband in bed with another woman. She then demanded an explanation but instead of being remorseful, the husband started assaulting her,” she said.
The neighbour, who appeared very disturbed by the incident, said the woman, who could not stomach the physical abuse and humiliation, drank rat poison and left home.
She said the deceased was later found lying and writhing in pain in an open space between Nehosho and Daleysford suburbs.
“She was then rushed to Gweru General Hospital where she died on admission,” she said.
Contacted for comment, Midlands Province police spokesperson, Inspector Patrick Chademana confirmed receiving the sudden death report of Ms Makanyire.
He appealed to members of the public to seek counselling services from churches and other professional counsellors whenever they had problems.
